The Brighton Royal Pavillion

We had the afternoon today to explore another part of the coastline. I love Brighton for it garishness and brashness. Its been a popular seaside resort for years - starting with the Prince Regent - George in the early 1800s.

By all accounts, he and his father never saw eye to eye, which I am guessing contributed to his passion for spending money on outrageous things. He flew in the face of tradition and built this luscious palace, being influenced by the mysteries of the Orient at the time.

The palace is an uncomfortable mix mash of colours and symbols - one I am not sure I'd be able to sleep in...

There is a room where there are literally thousands of gold leaves individually pasted in patterns.. I can't imagine how heavy it must be, or how much money it must have cost.
